Studio tour: Apiece Apart™

On a road trip through Texas, two best friends were inspired to create the perfect travel wardrobe of mix-and-matchable pieces. Six years later, they’re taking on your entire closet.

For a brand with such a singular name, arriving at it was—according to designers and friends Laura Cramer and Starr Hout—completely collaborative. “We were going back and forth about it over email, and we came to Apiece Apart,” explains Laura. “The idea is about how individual pieces relate to the whole. And it sounds like ‘pizza party,’ which may have been subliminal.” Their design process is also a total team effort, beginning with them pulling imagery (“interiors, art, women on the street”), then sketching until “we find the thread,” says Starr. “We launch the entire collection from there.”

“This was a very personal collection. We were thinking about the things that first drew us to the city,” says Laura.

The inspiration for fall 2014 came from New York City itself, where the friends first met as NYU students and where their line is now predominantly made. “This was a very personal collection,” says Laura. “We were thinking about the things that first drew us to the city—the legacy of the ’80s art scene and music from Patti Smith and the Talking Heads.” The result is full of graphic prints and textured fabrics inspired by artists Alex Katz and Brice Marden, as well as some favorite silhouettes from collections past. “Every season is an evolution on those building blocks,” explains Starr, referencing the small line of elevated packable basics that first made their name. Echoes Laura, “Each of those pieces is still relevant. I have them all and still wear them!”
