Locals Only: Wandie Kabule, Los Angeles

The travel blogger and film production coordinator shares some favorite spots around her up-and-coming neighborhood Atwater Village (think Ethiopian food and old kung fu movies)—plus, tips on a few farther-flung locales. Like where-to-ride-a-donkey-type tips.

In the backyard of her Atwater Village home, Wandie wears our cotton Jackie shell, micro-pleated midi skirt in lemon sorbet and SeaVees® for J.Crew Legend sneakers.

ON HER STYLE PHILOSOPHY

“I like to dress like I’m on vacation. I love wide-leg pants, button-up shirts, leather sandals… Those are my go-tos. At night, I definitely dress up—but always with at least one casual element like flats or jeans. I’m not big on jewelry, but I have a soft spot for big hoop earrings.”

ON SOUVENIRS (THAT AREN’T SNOW GLOBES)

“I always try to find textiles and local crafts when I’m traveling—baskets, pottery, anything that’s made by the people in the area I’m visiting. Traveling is also a way to learn and grow. I feel like I’m learning in every place I visit, and I try to bring some of what I’ve learned back with me. Like in Morocco, where I took a cooking class to learn how to work with a tagine!”

“I got these masks at the Masaya Market in Nicaragua. I’m obsessed with them! Those colors!”

“Our dog’s name is Pickle, and my fiancé and I adopted her just over two years ago. She’s about 8 years old and has stolen my heart. Her favorite hobbies are licking people, sleeping and smiling. Oh and hogging the bed.”

“I love anything that reminds me of the places I’ve been lucky enough to visit. This rug is from Morocco, and the textile on my bed is a Suzani fabric I got in Istanbul.” Also shown: our Collection leather high-heel sandals in mixed gingham, available May 17th.

“Our house is decorated with furniture that my fiancé, James, built, along with funky textiles and other finds from my travels. Filling the house with color makes it feel so lived-in and cozy.”

ON WHERE YOU SHOULD GO NEXT

“Essaouira, Morocco, is one of my favorite places in the world. It’s so funky and chill. It’s like a Rasta beach town in the middle of North Africa. Port Antonio, Jamaica, is another one. There are waterfalls and lagoons and swimming holes everywhere—and some of the best fish you’ll ever eat. Hydra is my favorite Greek Island. You can only get around by walking or by donkey.”

ON HER DAY JOB

“I work for Ridley Scott’s production company. We do commercials, film and television. Getting to meet amazing directors and witness incredible collaborations never gets boring! It’s fun to play make-believe."

“The photo on top shows my dad (on the right) when he was growing up in the UK. The bottom photo is my mom and me in Cameroon, where I lived as a kid.”

“My family moved to LA in the mid-’90s from Zambia. I’m in love with it here. You know how it seems like it’s always sunny and perfect? It is! Oh and it’s close to Disneyland.”
“I got this little straw basket in The Gambia in West Africa a few months ago. There was a man weaving them at a really funky spot called Lamin Lodge. I had to have it!”
