#WCW: Abbi Jacobson

You may know actress, writer and comedian Abbi Jacobson as Abbi Abrams, the artist/Soulstice trainer trying to make it in NYC on Comedy Central’s Broad City. But, plot twist—she’s also an amazing trained artist in real life. Here, she shares the inspiration behind her new book, Carry This Book, which gives an illustrated peek inside some pretty famous people’s bags...Or at least what she imagines might be in there.

HOW CARRY THIS BOOK CAME ABOUT:
“I feel like most people know me from Broad City, but my first love was fine art. I’ve always wanted to do an illustrated book and really missed drawing and making things with my hands. This felt like the perfect way to keep a foot in that world.”

THE STRANGEST THING IN HER BAG:
“The amount and variety of pens in there. It’s completely unnecessary, but it’s comforting to have options.”

THE MOST USEFUL…
“Going to have to go back to the pens. I also usually carry a book, hand sanitizer, my glasses and a few fortune cookie quotes that live in my wallet. Every time I get a good one, I hang on to it.”

THE OLDEST…
“Coffee punch cards from neighborhoods past.”

THE SMELLIEST…
“Aesop hand balm. Smelly in a good way.”

“I’ve always been fascinated by what people carry around with them—there are so many different ways to prepare for a day. It’s the smallest little voyeuristic insight into who they are and how they live.”
Abbi
Abbi welcomes us inside her colorful, chocolate-filled imagination.

HER FAVORITE BOOKSTORE IN NYC:
“McNally Jackson in Nolita or Three Lives & Co. in Greenwich Village.”

HER GO-TO KARAOKE SONG:
“It used to be 'Son of a Preacher Man,' but it’s been a while.”

PEOPLE ALWAYS TELL HER SHE LOOKS LIKE…
“America Ferrera, Ally Sheedy and—more than once—the little boy from Sleepless in Seattle.”
HER EIGHTH-GRADE SIGNATURE STYLE:
“Overalls and a tight long-sleeve T-shirt.”

THE THREE THINGS SHE’D BRING TO A DESERT ISLAND: “Lover/friend, phone, knife.”

THE VICE SHE’LL NEVER GIVE UP:
“Drinking. And ice cream.”

HER SPIRIT EMOJI:
💅

What’s in Martha Stewart’s bag (at least according to Abbi)

P.S. Want even more Abbi? Keep an eye out for her new film Person to Person—costarring Michael Cera and Tavi Gevinson (it debuted at Sundance on January 20th, 2017).
