How to Upgrade Your Beach Game

Mikey DeTemple, a photographer/filmmaker and pro surfer, has spent years touring the beaches of the world. We caught up with Mikey on a recent trip to Eleuthera in the Bahamas, where he was searching for waves via seaplane with his pal Karina Petroni, who owns a local vacation rental company, Touchstone Properties, and asked him for some tips on summertime off-duty style.

SWAP A TEE FOR AN OXFORD

“I wear a short-sleeve oxford with trunks all the time at the beach. There’s a lot of versatility in a shirt like that—it’s nice to have the option to unbutton a couple of buttons and get some air, and it still looks cool and casual.”

GET THE PERFECT FIT

“I really like the length and fit of these trunks. They’re above the knee, but not crazy short. They just fit really well.”

ADD A HOT-WEATHER SWEATER

“My wife makes fun of me all the time because no matter how hot it is, I always have a sweater in my bag. The weather changes, the wind picks up—it can give you a bit of a chill, so it’s perfect to have a thin, comfortable sweater on hand.”

SUMMERIZE YOUR SHORTS

“These lightweight stretch shorts are the closest thing to being in swim trunks without actually being in swim trunks. They also have a bit of stretch to them, which is incredible, especially when you’re doing things like breaking down in the truck. She’s amazing, but she’s a picky girl.”
