Beauty Notes: Beautycounter's Gregg Renfrew

Gregg Renfrew is the founder and voice behind LA-based Beautycounter®, a new line of skin care and beauty products that’s all about safety and transparency.

Q: What inspired you to launch Beautycounter?

A: After watching the eco-documentary An Inconvenient Truth, I learned that we are exposed to toxic chemicals every day, so I started replacing everything (plastic lunch boxes, cleaning supplies) that I thought might be harmful to my family.

Q: One of the most used words in the Beautycounter vocabulary is “safety”—can you talk a bit about that?

A: The average woman is exposed to hundreds of chemicals every day through her beauty products. Beautycounter is about educating and shifting behavior—giving people the information they need to make informed decisions.

The average woman is exposed to hundreds of chemicals every day through her beauty products.”

Q: How do Beautycounter’s formulas differ from other products out there?

A: Our commitment to safety and transparency sets us apart, and we’ve worked hard to develop the strictest and most health-protective ingredient screen in the industry.  You’ll never find unnecessary extras—no dyes, no mysteries—only ingredients that serve a specific and important function.

Q: Tell us how you use the products we’re carrying at J.Crew…

A: Because it’s less humid here in California, my skin gets really dry, so I’m constantly using our Lustro body oil and body lotion. They both smell terrific and can be layered on days when you need a little extra moisture. The eye cream is terrific for midday hydration, so I’ll dab a little under my eyes when I’m feeling tired. I even sneak it around my lips to prevent fine lines.

Q: Tell us about your "Never List".

A: We wanted to create our own set of guidelines, so we did our homework and developed a Never List—a roundup of 1,500 ingredients that you’ll never find in our products. You can print it out here.
