Travel Notes:
Palm Springs

We headed to the Palm Springs desert—where the sun shines over 350 days a year (true story)—to shoot our May Style Guide. After a few days with the gorgeous weather, a nonstop ’50s soundtrack and some mid-century architecture, that whole “best coast” thing really started to click.

“Palm Springs has a certain quality of light that feels warm and optimistic.”
Mark, art director

OUTTAKES FROM OUR STYLE GUIDE
Located just north of Palm Springs, the Desert House is a work of midcentury-inspired modern art. It was designed in 2005 by the LA-based architecture firm Marmol Radziner, and the clean, contemporary lines set the perfect scene for our collection. (Featuring the linen zip-front dress in gold foil leaf.)

A breathtaking backyard: hundreds of little creosote bushes (a popular plant in dry, hot climates), with the San Jacinto mountains in the distance.

The 2,000-square-foot L-shaped house strategically surrounds a sprawling rectangular pool to keep away wind and dust.

We also spent some time at the Parker, the fabulous hotel (decorated by Jonathan Adler) that’s located on 13 acres of perfectly manicured landscape. Pictured here: its iconic facade—an intricate brise-soleil, French for “sun breaker.”

We brought some inflatable friends.

When we weren’t poolside, we were playing a little tennis, croquet or petanque since the Parker is known for its delightfully old-fashioned activities.

“When I’m in Palm Springs, I feel like time has stopped—there’s a very nostalgic feel to everything there, even the contemporary homes.”
Gayle, head stylist
OUR LAST VISIT
In 2008, we shot our March Style Guide at the legendary Kaufmann House, which was designed by Vienna-born Richard Neutra.
