Mother's Day With...Carolyn Murphy

The New York-based model and mom to daughter Dylan, 15, fills us in on what she loves about being a parent—and what’s on her Mother’s Day wish list.

With daughter Dylan.

Photographed by Pamela Hanson with her labs Rupert and Emerson.

A poem written by Dylan last year for Mother’s Day.

Dylan at age 5.

“I’ve loved every second of being a mother. Feeling that unconditional love and bond is so special. The hardest part is having to let go—Dylan’s getting older and more independent, but she’ll always be my baby.”

CAROLYN’S MOTHER’S DAY TRADITIONS

“It’s usually breakfast in bed, made by and enjoyed with Dylan, followed by an afternoon bike ride or some adventure into nature (like a drive upstate).”

THE STORY BEHIND HER DAUGHTER’S NAME, DYLAN BLUE

“There are a couple of different inspirations. First, my mother’s family is from Wales, and Dylan means the sea in Welsh. Second, Bob Dylan is a musical icon of mine, and Tangled Up in Blue is a favorite song. Hence Dylan Blue, meaning the blue sea.

MOTHER-DAUGHTER TIME

“We typically spend a lot of time primping. Dylan loves beauty products, and I’m more of a tomboy, so she wrangles me into what I call her personal spa. Once we get beyond that, we’ll walk all over the city, going to restaurants or the movies and visiting friends.”

WHAT SHE DIDN’T SEE COMING

“Raising a teenager is both joyful and nutty—especially as a single mother. I’ve been surprised to find myself disciplining her and saying the same things my parents said to me. I’m also surprised at how smart this generation is, but I think it’s important to unplug them from technology every now and then and spend time doing things the old-fashioned way.”
