How-to: The Scarf, 7 Ways

What do Jackie O and old-timey bank robbers have in common? They both really know how to pull off a scarf. Whether it’s cotton or silk, square or skinny, here are a few ideas for how to style yours, with illustrations by our women’s designer (and epic Instagrammer) Julie.

THE SQUARE SCARF

The bed head cover-up

Best accompanied by a very strong cup
of coffee.

1. Fold the scarf in half diagonally.

2. Place the folded edge at your hairline.

3. Tie the two folded corners behind your head.

The wilderness knot

Pairs well with s’mores.
1. Roll the scarf up diagonally.
2. Tie it around your neck and double-knot it in the front.

The bandit

But please don’t rob a bank. We’ll get
in trouble.

1. Fold the scarf in half diagonally.

2. Tie the two folded corners behind your neck.

The carry-on

For some added, ahem, purse-onality.
1. Tie the scarf around the base of your bag's strap.

2. Uh, that’s it. Good work.

THE SKINNY SCARF

The turtleneck tie

Your year-round stand-in for an
actual turtleneck.

1. Wrap the scarf around your neck once, leaving the ends hanging in front.

2. Double-knot the ends in front of your neck.

The fast & loose

Literally foolproof. Plus, bonus drama on windy days (or in convertibles).
1. Place the scarf around your neck so both ends hang
in front.

2. Toss one end over your shoulder.

The scarflet

Aka an excuse to use really dramatic
hand gestures.

1. Wrap the scarf around your wrist twice.

2. Tie the ends in a double knot (teeth help).
