@work with Cynthia Nimmo of
Women’s Funding Network

As part of our Style Your Success series with WeWork and LinkedIn, we’re talking to and getting inspired by a few entrepreneurs across the country. Here, Cynthia Nimmo—CEO of Women’s Funding Network and member of WeWork in San Francisco—tells us about her career heroes, her afternoon pick-me-ups, how she makes her denim office-friendly and what she’s “in it” for.

ABOUT THE WOMEN'S FUNDING NETWORK:
We connect over 100 organizations across the world, all working toward the same goal: to create opportunity and equality for women and girls. We have a myriad of programs and events, from our Women Funded global conference to creating tools for female entrepreneurs to creating content for our social media platforms.

THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB:
Every day, I work with dynamic, incredibly smart and creative women from all over the world. Some of it is in person, most of it is virtual. I am endlessly inspired.

FIRST THOUGHT WHEN YOUR ALARM GOES OFF:
“Who am I meeting with today?”

YOUR MORNING ROUTINE:
I meditate for 10 minutes to get balanced. After getting dressed, it's time to help my son get ready for school. There’s a flurry of making breakfast, packing lunch and grabbing backpacks before we head out the door.

COFFEE ORDER:
Green tea!

WHAT YOU'RE "IN IT" FOR:
Millions of girls aren’t in school around the world and millions of women aren’t able to reach their full potential, whether due to lack of land ownership or lack of pay equity. Add the millions of men who don’t have the opportunity to be their whole, emotional and giving selves—it’s time to right the imbalance.
AFTERNOON SNACK OF CHOICE:
I keep cashews and pistachios in my office and usually bring in a tangerine or apple to snack on.

YOU SPEND YOUR COMMUTE:
I take the bus to my WeWork office. I check for news mostly related to the well-being of women and girls, and, of course, I respond to emails!

COMMUTING STYLE HACK:
Only bring one bag to work. If you empty your bag once a week, you’ll be amazed at how much stuff you don’t actually need or use.

YOUR OFFICE STYLE:
I always wear a jacket. It gives any outfit a polished look. I rarely wear jeans, but when I do, it’s still with a jacket.

POP QUIZ: YOU'RE MEETING FRIENDS FOR DINNER AFTER WORK. HOW DO YOU SHIFT (STYLE) GEARS?
I’ll bring heels to change into and swap for a top under my blazer that has a little more pizazz.

YOUR FIRST JOB:
My first job in high school was working as a restaurant hostess. My first job out of college was working for a U.S. senator in Washington, D.C.
WHEN YOU WERE A KID, YOU WANTED TO BE:
A nurse. Then in high school, I wanted to join the Foreign Service and become an ambassador.

ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF:

Don't try so hard. Strive for excellence, not perfection.

CAREER ROLE MODEL:
Michelle Obama. She's as warm in person as she appears in the media. She worked hard to balance her career as a lawyer with being a mom and seemed to bring that commitment to her role as First Lady. She's smart and savvy, gracious and easygoing.

THE BEST THING ABOUT THE WEWORK COMMUNITY:
It supports constant creativity. It's so easy to get sucked into your own job, interacting with people through your computer for hours on end and forgetting about the rest of the world. Being in a WeWork space means you're constantly aware of other companies, new ideas and new ventures. We connect in person, in passing and online too. We've used the online community to find freelancers, advertise job openings, invite people to events... You name it. There's a lot of cross-sector pollination going on. It's informal and that's why it works!

THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS:
Be open. Forget the road map you drew for yourself. Opportunities you weren't even looking for will come your way. Explore them.
